How to Extend the Service Life of S235JR Through Surface Treatment
S235JR is a reliable structural steel, but it doesn’t like moisture. Left bare, it rusts quickly. The good news? A few simple surface treatments can dramatically extend its life in bridges, frames, or outdoor supports.
Start with surface preparation – this matters more than the coating itself. Remove mill scale, rust, and grease. Sandblasting to Sa 2.5 is ideal. No blaster? Use a power tool or wire brush, but expect shorter coating life.
Then choose your protection. For indoor or dry use, a simple shop primer or alkyd paint works. For outdoor or aggressive environments, go with epoxy or polyurethane coatings – they seal out water and oxygen. Even a galvanized layer (hot-dip) works wonders if you can afford it.
Don’t forget edges and drilled holes – they corrode first. Apply extra attention there. In coastal or industrial zones, add a topcoat for UV and chemical resistance.
Regular inspection helps too. Touch up scratches quickly before rust spreads. With proper surface prep and coating, your S235JR structure can last decades instead of months.
