Turning Machinability of S235JR Steel
Speeds and feeds are forgiving. For carbide inserts, start around 150–200 m/min surface speed, with a feed rate of 0.2–0.4 mm/rev for roughing. For finishing, push speeds to 250 m/min with lighter feeds. High-speed steel (HSS) tools? Drop to 20–30 m/min – they work, but carbide is more productive.
Chip control is decent. S235JR produces short, broken chips at moderate feeds, especially with chip-breaker geometries. Use coolant or cutting fluid to keep heat down and extend tool life. Without it, built-up edge (BUE) can appear on the tool tip, spoiling surface finish.
Tough spots to watch: thin-walled or long shafts can vibrate. Use steady rests, sharp inserts, and light depths of cut (0.5–1.0 mm for finishing). Also, the steel's low hardness means abrasive wear isn't a big issue – but edge buildup is, so keep those inserts sharp.
Tool life is excellent – 15–20 minutes per edge is normal under good conditions. Unlike harder alloys, S235JR won't eat your tools. It rewards steady, consistent cuts.
