Correspondence between EN10025 S235JR and DIN St37 2
If you've got drawings calling for DIN St37-2, you're likely wondering how it maps to today's EN10025 S235JR. The short answer: they're direct equivalents. When Europe harmonized steel standards, St37-2 was renamed S235JR – same chemistry, same mechanical properties.
St37-2 under DIN 17100 specified a minimum yield of 235 MPa and tensile range of 360–510 MPa. S235JR under EN 10025 carries identical requirements, plus a guaranteed 27J Charpy impact at +20°C. The "R" means room-temperature toughness; the old St37-2 didn't always enforce that test.
One nuance: St37-2 came in sub-grades (U, R, etc.). The closest modern match is S235JR for general structural use. For colder service, S235J0 or S235J2 replace older St37-3 grades.
In practice, fabricators swap them freely. But always confirm the material certificate – some old St37-2 stock may lack impact testing documentation. When in doubt, order S235JR with full EN 10204 3.1 certification.
